The Library
Vivre en français! is our motto at École Laronde Elementary. Here in the Laronde Library our goal is that students develop a love for multi-language reading, commit to life long learning, and become discerning users of all types of information. Our library is a welcoming space where students can explore, learn, relax, imagine, and create. Books can open the mind and the world!
Our library encourages all learners, students and teachers alike. We are generously supported by our PAC, and enjoy partnership with our local Surrey Public Libraries for many different activities. The Laronde Library relies on its amazing student monitors who help to keep things rolling during the busy school year. All in all, we wish our students, teachers, parents, and friends welcome!
Mme. Montgomery
Here's a little bit about me. I am from a small town on Vancouver Island. I began teaching in the Surrey District as a substitute (which I loved), then as une enseignante de la 3ième année (so fun), now as une bibliothécaire (my dream!). I studied education at SFU, but also have a degree in Art History and Italian from UVic. My husband and I love travelling, hiking, and music. I love baking. I love croissants. I love ice cream. I have a habit of collecting books: old books, picture books, novels, cookbooks.... In the classroom I believe that developing a love for reading is hugely valuable, music and creativity make the world go 'round, and learning to make mistakes then learning from those mistakes is integral to grow as a person.

Class Visits
This year will be a little different as we adapt to district health and safety guidelines. All intermediate classes have an exchange block during the week to come hear about what's new and to explore and borrow books. Primary classes come to the library once a week to hear a story, create, imagine, explore, practice library skills, and exchange books.
Book Limits
Students in kindergarten may take out 1 book per week (in any language).
Students in grades 1 & 2 may take out 2 books per week (1 English 1 French) .
Students in grades 3 - 7 may take out 3 books per week (at least 1 French).
Monitors have special privileges!
Books are checked out for a two week loan period. But, as students come in to the library each week, most exchange them more frequently. Books must be returned before new ones can be checked out.
Health & Safety Measures
Students will sanitize there hands when entering and exiting the library. Hands will also be sanitized before book browsing begins. All books returned to the library will be quarantined for a minimum of 3 days before being returned to the shelves.
Lost / Damaged Books
Students are encouraged to keep school library books in a special place (apart from public library books). If a book is damaged or lost please inform Mme. M. Don't worry though, lost books often have a way of turning up eventually. Fines will not be assessed till May/June to allow for this. At that time you may choose to replace the exact copy of the book or pay the fine.
6/7 Only Books
In our library there is a section of books marked 6/7 Only. These books are restricted to upper intermediate because they contain more mature subject matter. Students in grade 5 wishing to read 6/7 Only books must bring in written parental permission which will be kept on file for one year.
